La Luna y El Toro

The Los Angeles-based Peruvian salseros Octavio Figueroa (pianist) and Willy Cadenas (vocalist) are distinguished exponents of the local salsa scene, whose careers date back to the early 1980s, when both led their own salsa bands (Octavio Figueroa & La Sorpresa, and Willy Cadenas & La Combinación). For more than a decade the bandleaders merged their efforts, becoming one group-La Combinación Salsa Band. This new recording is Octavio Figueroa's way of paying tribute to his longtime partner Cadenas, one of the leading salsa vocalists in the L.A. salsa scene. A total of ten tracks unveils Cadenas' career as a singer, while revisiting six songs that launched his early career in Perú, back in the 1970s. Among our favorite tunes are the title track (La Luna y El Toro), A Santa Bárbara, and Trátame Como Soy. Figueroa does a commendable bandleading job on the keyboards, and he is credited for many of the arrangements in this recording, which features various notable L.A.-based percussionists such as José "Papo" Rodríguez, Ramoncito Ramos, Virgilio Figueroa, Marcos Tabory, and the late Víctor Pantoja. — Rudy Mangual

This is Maria Pintor, Jose's daughter.  Thank you for the great music.  My dad gave me your CD a couple weeks ago and I haven't stopped playing it.  It is the greatest salsa music I have heard for years.  I hear your piano playing on the tape and it is just so wonderful to me since my favorite instrument is the piano.   I don't think the piano is loud enough on a lot of salsa music. Well, I just wanted to tell you how fantastic you are and your band is awesome!  I hope you record again soon.  Take care.

Octavio Figueroa and Willy Cadenas go back to the early eighties, when the two Peruvian salseros met in the Los Angeles club scene. In those days, each led his own band and hired each other’s musical talents with such frequency that they became inseparable and decided to merge. So Tavio’s La Sorpresa and Willy’s La Combinación became one band, and its extended family of musicians includes some of the top L.A. players.

 

This CD is Tavio’s tribute, as executive producer and arranger, to his longtime partner Willy for his years as a leading L.A. sonero. In it, these two salseros revisit the six songs that launched Willy’s career in Peru in the 70s, via Octavio’s arrangements of salsa drenched in jazz with a Peruvian tinge.

 

The repertoire features four Peruvian composers. Two songs were originally valses before Tavio cast the clave on them: Rafael Otero Lopez’s “Odiame” (Hate Me), which displays an intro of palmierian chord progressions, and Augusto Polo Campos’ “La Jarana de Colón” (Colombus’ Party), with its inventive lyrics telling the story of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in Callao, and how he fell for the peruanas, burned his three caravels and stayed. Mario Cavagnaro’s “Emborráchame de Amor” (Inebriate Me with Love), is a bolero with steamy lyrics, which Hector Lavoe recorded after Willy’s initial version.

 

While recording “A La Memoria Del Muerto” (To the Dead Man’s Memory), Willy lost his mother, trumpeter Jorge Arcineaga lost his father, and Peruvians mourned the loss of legendary singer Arturo “Zambo” Cavero. Willy includes soneos in their honors, and also to Darrell Alatorre’s Mama Juana’s and Armando Castro’s El Floridita, as a way of thanking the two venues for their constant and unwavering support throughout the years.

 Shortly after the CD’s completion, the band lost its beloved bongocero, the world renowned percussionist Victor Pantoja. We love you, “Papi!” 

Trumpeter Gary Eisenberg, a longtime friend and collaborator, offers his mambo-in-whole-tones arrangement of “Que Dichoso Es,” featuring Papo Rodriguez’s sizzling rumba intro. Papo’s congas also spice up Celina y Reutillio’s “A Santa Barbara.”

 

The band inherited the arrangement of Maraca’s “Trátame Como Soy” after accompanying Japanese vocalist Nora at The Conga Room, and “La Guarapachanga” is one of the band’s favorite live numbers, borrowed from Arturo Sandoval’s The Latin Train.

No es secreto para todo salsero que toma su música bien en serio, que la ciudad de Los Ángeles, California, tiene lo suyo. Esto no es nuevo; ha sido así por mucho tiempo, y las evidencias sobran. Dos de las estrellas más conocidas en el ambiente salsero local son el pianista Octavio Figueroa y el cantante Willy Cadenas – ambos del Perú --, los cuales han estado activos por más de dos décadas. El candente y efervescente “La Luna y el Toro” une ambos talentos, donde Octavio le rinde tributo a su amigo Willie.

El compacto cuenta con diez sabrosos temas, todos cargados de ese sonido crudo que busco y disfruto cuando lo encuentro. El mismo arranca con “La Luna y el Toro”, una nueva versión de este conocido número, a manera de guaracha. Le sigue otro favorito, la rumba / guaracha “A Santa Bárbara”, en una nueva versión pegajosa del clásico de Celina y Reutilio – una joya de verdad. Otros predilectos son “A la Memoria del Muerto”, otra versión del tema que una vez escuchamos con Fruko y sus Tesos; “Que Dichoso es”, suculenta guaracha, que creo escuché la última vez con Ralphy Santi; y “La Guarapachanga”, otra pieza conocida que alegremente cierra la producción.

Hubo un tiempo donde Octavio Figueroa liderizaba la orquesta La Sorpresa, mientras que Willie Cadenas hacía lo mismo con La Combinación. Con el pasar de los años, ambos músicos unieron sus grupos y el resultado ha sido fenomenal. “La Luna y el Toro” incluye algunos de los mejores talentos del área angelina, y al escuchar el mismo, estoy seguro que se darán cuenta que la salsa en esta maravillosa ciudad vive y está en buenas manos.
